About the Training Series
Learning Together is an important school board training series focused on the upcoming 2025 Elections. This program aims to empower a diverse range of candidates to consider running for office, ensuring that those with lived experiences have the essential knowledge and skills needed to be successful school board directors.
By providing foundational information on critical topics such as the roles of school board directors, funding and budgets, equity, and campaign strategies, Learning Together helps candidates prepare not only to run for election but also to effectively govern at the board level.
The initiative focuses on building a strong pipeline of candidates who are informed about educational equity. This, in turn, benefits students, educators, and school communities by fostering an environment that expects and supports educational excellence.
Some speakers and organizations that will join us throughout the training series:
Current Seattle school board directors Gina Topp, Sarah Clark, Nancy Katims, school board director in Edmonds School District, former Seattle school board directors Leslie Harris, Lisa Rivera, Michael DeBell and Kay Smith-Blum.
Sharonne Navos from Equity in Education Center, Ian Coon from Alliance for Education, Adie Simmons from Washington Family Engagement, Jennifer Matters educator and former union leader, Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning, Liz Huizar, Southeast Seattle Education Coalition, Emily Carmichael from Vote, Run, Lead, Debbie Carlsen, Education and Training Chair from National Women's Political Caucus of Washington, SOFG material from Rick Maloney and more!
All of the current school board directors have been invited - more to come!
